Ask anyone what the word “home” means, and you’ll get a broad range of answers. Some might say it’s a place where they gather with family and friends. For others, it might be somewhere they can escape from the world. Although these answers might seem different, they have one important thing in common: a warm, positive feeling that is unique to that person and that place.

REALTORS® know better than anyone else that most people don't buy a home just because someone convinced them that it's in a nice neighborhood or that it's a good investment. Although these are key factors in the decision, most people buy because of how they felt when they walked into a certain house. This indescribable connection is what makes homeownership such a valuable asset.

As REALTORS®, we know there are tangible benefits to homeownership, too. According to the most recent data from the Federal Reserve Board, a homeowner’s net worth is 46 times that of a renter’s.

In addition, many studies have shown that communities with high percentages of owner-occupied homes are more stable, enjoy more involvement by residents in the civic affairs of the community, and even have higher test scores by their children.

One study found that 77% of homeowners said they had at some point voted in local elections, compared with 52% of renters. Other research showed that homeowners are far less likely to become crime victims.

We REALTORS® are fortunate to have the task of protecting and furthering the American Dream of homeownership. So next month, take the time to reflect and celebrate National Homeownership Month!
